Course 2016

Program:

This one-day course is aimed at providing all the necessary information that a beginner backyard/urban/small- scale beekeeper would need for their first season of keeping honeybees. The course consists of classroom presentations, and a practical beekeeping session at the McGill Apicultural Association's apiary.

Description:

While honeybees are crucial pollinators in agricultural, urban and natural ecosystems, their populations are declining around the world, and many hives aren't as productive as they used to be. Here in Quebec, we are no exception. Through practical work with bee colonies at McGill’s Macdonald Campus Apiary in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, this backyard beekeeping course raises awareness on the importance of honeybees and how to start your honeybee colony in your own backyard.

This course will focus on the real-life beekeeping knowledge, that is relevant to the backyard beekeeping style, and Quebec climate conditions. It is largely inspired by the frequently asked questions that were posed by the novice beekeepers to the McGill Apicultural Association's apiary and the instructor over the years. The course will also try to address most of the choices the beginning beekeeper needs to face:

- Choice of the bees

- Choice of the equipment

- Location

- Individual beekeeping style

- Benefits and shortcomings of each

During the course, the beginning beekeeper will be guided through his/her first season from the moment the hive is set up to the winter preparation by going over the colony buildup, and the optimal conditions for such, how to spot problems, if they occur, and how to solve them, pest and diseases to keep an eye on, and how to start preparing the bees for winter.
